organizes a Shakuhachi Workshop in Basel

from 2nd to 4th of July 2010


This workshop is dedicated to Kinko-Ryû and Taizan-Ryû and is tailored for
beginners, intermediate and advanced students. Upon request there will be an
introductory course.

Kikuchi Naoko (Koto, Sangen), Ikuta-Ryû
Andreas Gutzwiller (Shakuhachi)
Ueli Derendinger (Shakuhachi)

Andrea Hofer (Shakuhachi)

The workshop will be held in the rooms of the Musikwerkstatt Basel.
There will be an opportunity to get acquainted with and deepen the practice of the
honkyoku repertoire of Taizan- and Kinko-schools. For Sankyoku (Jiuta- and
Sôkyoku-Repertoire of the Ikuta-school) we will be accompanied by Koto und
Shamisen. Lectures and concerts will round out the workshop. There are enough
rooms for instruction and practice.

Dear ESS members:

I'm glad to announce the visit of (Kodama Hiroyuki) to Chiku Za in
Spain this comming spring. Most probably dates are April 1st to 18th.
Kodama is a great hotchiku player and maker, disciple of Okuda Atsuya
and Murai Eigoro.
There will be concerts and hochiku playing lessons. We are organizing
a koden honkyoku masterclass, and a 2 days hochiku making workshop if
there are enough people interested.
More detailed information will follow. But we need your feedback as
soon as possible, we could still change the program depending on demands.

February 2010:

One-day shakuhachi workshop with Michael Soumei Coxall and Kiku Day
When: 6 February 2010

Where: SOAS, University of London

This one-day workshop will be an intensive day of shakuhachi and an opportunity to dwell into the worlds of this fascinating instrument.
Michael Soumel Coxall will teach sankyoku and shinkyoku (ensemble pieces for shakuhachi and koto). Michael will teach the pieces that will be intermediate to advanced in the morning session and during the afternoon koto player Keiko Kitamura will join us and give the students the rare opportunity to play with koto.
Kiku Day will teach honkyoku (the original pieces for shakuhachi played by the Zen Buddhist monks of the Fuke sect during the Edo period) at intermediate level during the morning and advanced level during the afternoon. Everybody can join the whole day even if the level of playing does not fit exactly.
The day will end will all students presenting the pieces learned in groups for each other.
Fee for the one-day workshop: £30

Schedule on 6 February:

9:00 - 9:30 registration (please bring the fee in cash or cheque)
9:30 - 12:30 classes (Michael: San-shinkyoku / Kiku: honkyoku intermediate level)
12:30 - 1:30 lunch
1:30 - 4:30 classes. (Michael: San-shinkyoku with koto player Keiko Kitamura / Kiku: Honkyoku advanced level)
5:00 ~ performance
Thereafter dinner nearby...

Michael Soumei Coxall is an experienced player and teacher from the Kinko School Chikumeisha branch. He specialises in ensemble music.
Kiku Day is a player and teacher of the Zensab? school. She specialises in the solo repertoire honkyoku.

Kinko-ryu Shakuhachi Honkyoku with Gunnar Jinmei Linder


Part I - Beginners Workshop
Where: Sibelius Music Academy, Helsinki, Finland
When: January 8th, 11:00 - 16:00

A preparatory course for those who are not familiar with the Kinko School, or beginners to the shakuhachi.
Fee: €30, including the Friday evening (5-9 pm) session and materials.

Part II - Preparatory Workshop/Review Class

When: January 8th, 17:00 - 20:00

Part III - Main Workshop/Master Class
Where: Helsinki Zen Centre, Helsinki, Finland
When:
January 9th, 8:30 - 18:30 & January 10th, 8:30 - 16:00
Fee: €130 (€110 for ESS or Chikujinkai members)
There will be a public concert after the session on the 9th, at 19:00

The workshop covers the pieces "Akita Sugagaki" and "Shika no Tone".

Gunnar Jinmei Linder lived in Japan 1985-2005. He studied shakuhachi with Yamaguchi Goro from 1985, took an M.A. in Shakuhachi from the National Univeristy of Fine Arts and Music (Tokyo Geidai) in 1997, and received his shihan in 1998. He is a member of the Kinko-ryu Kyokai, the Nihon Sankyoku Kyokai, and the Komuso Kenkyukai, and also an advisory board member of the ESS.
Gunnar lives in Stockholm, Sweden since 2005.
